  • Know that a group of things changes in quantity when something is added or taken away

Observation 2

Hailey built a tower formation with large plastic bricks. Two children watched from nearby quietly. A nearby adult said that the tower would soon be as tall as one of the children watching. Hailey began to quickly place more bricks on the tower to "Make it as big as Benji." She continued until she judged it to be the same height by adding and taking away bricks until she was satisfied. The second child watching contributed by saying "one more, no, too many".

Comments: Children love to build towers as tall as themselves or higher. Adding and taking away bricks allows for estimation and calculation.
