"Children must be supported in developing their understanding of Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy in a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practise and talk about their developing understanding. They must be provided with opportunities to practise and extend their skills in these areas and to gain confidence and competence in their use." Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 2008
The observations on the following pages arose out of action research as practitioners' across six settings explored children's mathematical development.
We were particularly looking out for children's mathematical mark-making and development towards written calculations but realised with such young children that we would need to observe children at play across all areas of experience within the settings as at such a young age children's learning is not compartmentalised.
The settings all provide rich experiences to support the development of Problem solving, Reasoning and Numeracy (PSRN) and we observed across the range of these experiences to see what motivates, supports and develops children's mathematical play and thinking and in particular their developments towards forming mathematical graphics.
